A Garden Takes Root…
Have you seen the transformation?
Here’s a look at how the Maritime Gardens are taking shape.
Last winter, snow covered a flat, excavated
space just north of the Museum. As winter
thawed into spring, construction of the
Maritime Gardens was underway and the
progress made during the summer and fall
has been astounding!
Last spring was very unique – it didn’t
allow our volunteers to do what we
planned to do early spring. The continual
rain pushed everybody’s schedule back
and didn’t leave a lot of room for the
businesses to volunteer their time.
Fall was as good as it possibly could
be. People showed up and fulfilled their
commitments – that was a blessing and it’s
amazing to see what a professional group
of people can get done in a short time.
For example, one day, we had seven
Bobcats and a mini-excavator working at
the same time on this two-acre piece of
land. Trucks brought in load after load of
class 5 rock to use as a base for the paths,
stage and structure areas. The group’s
efforts were orchestrated beautifully.
Museum Director Bruce Olson likened it
to a demolition derby where no one had
a crash. It was an enjoyable experience
for those who participated too. At the end
of the day everyone was smiling, saying,
“Wow! That was fun!”
Since then, these wonderful folks have
continued to show up when their work
schedule allows and continue the process.
Others, like the irrigation crews, are
waiting in the wings for their opportunity
to share their talents.
More and more people are stepping up to be part of the project – some with labor and others with financial support, which is always needed and very much appreciated.
