Maritime Gardens

A spectacular addition to the Alexandria community is about to be unearthed at the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum and we are excited to update and share with our members!

This fall, landscapers will begin forming the space behind the Museum to make way for the all new "Maritime Gardens".

It's planned to be a community gathering place in an educational environment. The acreage of land - just north of the Museum's building- holds wondrous potential. The space will features a lakeside setting with a variety of educational plantings, walking paths, picnic shelter, and band shelter with seating, bocce ball courts and a nautical-themed play area for children. We hope the Maritime Gardens will be used by families to gather for a picnic, for couples to wed in blissfully beautiful surrounds, for hand in hand evening strolls through the extensive gardens and many more opportunities to unwind, relax and enjoy the lakeside space.

"The area is shaping up to be a special destination that will be seen as a jewel and source of pride for the area." said Bruce Olson, director of Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum. "There's a whole lot of potential for the space and we're inviting you to be part of the process in generating ideas for the lush beautiful property."

"We have the commitment from a few individuals who have pledged their financial support to this project. In addition several businesses and community organizations have also expressed great interest in supporting different aspects of this venture," Olson explained. "It's pretty exciting when people step forward asking how they can help and support the project.  This is turning out to be a place that will be built by the community for the community."

The Maritime Gardens is in a prime location to draw visitors-it's near the Central Lakes Trial, Runestone Museum and downtown Alexandria. The creation of the gardens is expected to be a three-year project. The underground electrical is in place, and landscaping will begin after Labor Day.
